What’s a typical day?
There are three phases to my work.
There’s the proposal-writing stage.
Usually someone comes to me with a
research or business question. During
that phase, a good part of my day is spent
writing proposals, having phone calls to
talk about projects, trying to figure out
how the research would be done, creating
a team. It can be fast and furious, where
I’m on the computer or phone morning
The next phase would be the field
work, or actual research. I’m immersed in
the topic, the place, the endeavor. I often
travel for my work, so I’m living in hotels.
I’ve been to Canada, Australia, New
Zealand, Thailand, Germany, France,
Mexico, Poland, South Africa, Russia,
the United Kingdom, Brazil and other
places for my work. It’s deep immersion,
We do some semiotic work, really taking
apart the symbolism in print ads, web-
sites or retail design. Sometimes it entails
hanging out in a place, trying to under-
stand it and observing carefully.
The final phase is the analytical
phase—thinking about what it all means,
the implications—and then report writing. Traditionally, this has been in the
form of PowerPoint reports, coupled with
video to bring worlds to life for clients.
More recently, this phase has been taking
the form of more conversational, joint
analyses, with faster turnaround times.
One of the other things that’s happening
in this world is that studies are becoming
more and more international. It’s a global
world. I have a personal connection to
Ethiopia through my husband, plus
Ethiopia has one of the fastest-growing
economies in the world. I want to live
half time in Addis Ababa and half time
in New York. That’s what led to this new

looking at how luxury
