Austen Riggs Center Postdoctoral Fellowship
Clinical Psychology
The Austen Riggs Center is a psychiatric hospital and residential
treatment center focusing on the treatment of people with complex
psychological difficulties. Specializing in individual psychoanalytic
psychotherapy with adjunctive psychopharmacology and a sophisticated
therapeutic community, Riggs is routinely listed among the nation’s
top psychiatric treatment centers by US News & World Report. All of
our treatment occurs in a fully open setting, respecting the dignity and
development of the patient.
The Austen Riggs Center has been a training institution since 1924, and
a pioneer in the theory and technique of psychoanalytic treatment with
complex, “widening scope” patients. Organized under the Center’s
Erikson Institute for Education and Research, our training takes a systems
perspective on treatment, emphasizing cultural and familial contexts as well
as individual development, in the tradition of Erik Erikson.
We offer a two-year Fellowship in psychoanalytic psychotherapy,
and a four-year Fellowship in advanced psychoanalytic psychotherapy
and psychoanalytic studies. Fellowships are full-time, and include the
tripartite model of psychoanalytic training, including a personal analysis, a
didactic experience with a distinguished faculty, and individual supervision
in the treatment of patients using four-times weekly psychoanalytic
psychotherapy.
Work with families, psychological testing (for psychologists) and
psychodynamically-informed prescribing (for psychiatrists) are part of
our comprehensive training program. Fellows work within a therapeutic
community program, learning about the application of psychoanalytic
understanding to group phenomena. and supporting the development of
leadership and consulting skills.
The training experience at the Austen Riggs Center is also unique in
providing a competitive salary, generous benefits, and a stipend to support
two years of a personal psychoanalysis.
Psychology applicants must have a doctoral degree in psychology from an
APA-accedited program and a year of clinical internship at an APPIC-listed site.
Applications for both tracks of the fellowship program must be received by
