Special APA Events
Thursday, August 1, 12:00–2:00 p.m.
Get ready for a taste of something different. The APA Opening
Session will feature Hawaiian hula kahiko (ancient hula)
performed by award-winning dancers. Don’t miss this year’s
invigorating keynote address by Barry Scheck, JD, creator
of the Innocence Project, a national litigation and nonprofit,
public policy organization dedicated to acquitting the wrong-
fully convicted through the use of DNA testing. Jon Nachison,
PhD, will receive a presidential citation for his work with the
Stand Down project, a 3-day “camp” that gives homeless
veterans a chance to apply for jobs, housing, and health care
to get back on their feet. And Barbara Van Dahlen, PhD, one
of Time magazine’s Top 100 Most Influential People of 2012,
will receive a presidential citation for Give an Hour, a nonprofit
organization that works with psychologists to donate hours
of psychological treatment to returning service members. A
posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to
Albert Ellis, PhD, one of the most influential psychothera-
pists in history, on the anniversary of his 100th birthday. Also
receiving this award will be Antonette Zeiss, PhD, for her
outstanding work with the Department of Veterans Affairs.
APA President Donald N.
Bersoff, PhD, JD, has formulated three military-inspired
program themes that focus
on the issues surrounding
veterans and the men and
women currently serving in
the U.S. military:
* Treating Sexual Trauma
in Military Personnel
* Treating Children
and Spouses of Military
* Assessment and
Treatment of Military
Personnel and Veterans
