New graduate scholarship honors
William C. Howell
Colleagues and friends of psychologist
William C. Howell, PhD, have
established an APF scholarship to
pay tribute to Howell’s contributions
to psychology, including serving as
executive director of APA’s Science
Directorate from 1992–98 and on APF’s
Board of Trustees since 2000. Howell
died in April after a long illness (for
more on Howell, see the June Monitor).
The $1,000 William C. Howell
Graduate Research Scholarship will
be part of APF’s Graduate Research
Scholarship program. The Council of
Graduate Departments of Psychology
administers the program through APA’s
Science Directorate.
As head of APA’s Science Directorate
and later an APF trustee, Howell
encouraged APF to boost its support
for graduate students and early career

APF has presented the 2012 Frances M.
Culbertson Travel Grant to Piyanjali de
Zoysa, PhD, of
the University of
Colombo in Sri
Lanka. De Zoysa,
the founding
president of
the Psychology
Association of Sri
Lanka, will use
the $1,500 grant
to attend the
International Congress of Psychology
in Cape Town, South Africa, July 22–27,
where the Psychology Association of
Sri Lanka will become a member of the
International Union of Psychological
Sciences.
